더스티 스프링필드의 원래 이름은 'Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien' 으로 영국에서 50년 이상 활동했던 가수이다. 그녀는 메조 소프라노 성량을 가진 가수 였으며 블루 아이드 소울, 팝 과 드라마틱 한 발라드 등의 레퍼토리로, 1960년대 유럽에서 가장 성공적인 영국 여성 연주자 중 한 명으로 선정되기도 했다. 런던 웨스트 햄스테드에서 음악을 좋아하는 가정에서 태어난 Springfield는 1958년에 팝 보컬 트리오 라라 시스터즈(The Lana Sisters)의 정식멤버로 가입했다. 2년 후 라라 시스터즈에서 탈퇴 후, 그녀의 형제 Tom Springfield 및 Tim Field 와 함께 포크 팝 보컬 트리오 The Springfields를 결성했으며, 이 후 그들의 영국 탑 40 히트곡 5개 중 2개('Island of Dreams' 및 'Say I Won't Be There')가 1961~63년 1위에 올랐다. ​ Springfield의 솔로 경력은 1963년 후반에 경쾌한 팝 레코드 'I Only Want to Be With You'로 시작되는데, 이 곡은 후에 영국 싱글차트 4위에 오르게 된다. 이후 1960년대 중반까지 'Wishin' And Hopin'(1964년 빌보드 싱글차트 6위), 'You Don't Have To Say You Love Me'(1966년 4위), 'The Look Of Love'(1967년 22위) 등의 싱글을 히트시키며 대중적인 인기를 얻었다. 1966년 Springfield는< Melody Maker's Best International Vocalist> 를 포함한 인기 투표에서 1위를 차지했으며 여성 가수에 대한 <New Musical Express> 독자 투표 에서 1위를 차지한 최초의 영국 가수가 되기도 했다. ​ 1970년대부터는 별다른 인기를 얻지 못했는데, 1987년 피처링으로 참여한 영국의 신스팝 듀오 펫 숍 보이스의 노래 'What Have I Done To Deserve This?' 가 영국 싱글차트 2위에 오르는 히트로 새로이 조명을 받기도 했으나, 1999년에 암으로 사망했다. <로큰롤 명예의 전당> 과 <영국음악 명예의 전당>의 회원이기도 하다. ​ 'The Windmills of Your Mind(그대 마음속의 풍차)'는 영화 <토마스 크라운 어페어(The Thomas Crown Affair)>에 삽입되었던 곡으로 프랑스의 작곡가 미셀 장 르그랑(Michel Jean Legrand)이 작곡하고, 미국인 Alan & Marilyn Bergman 이 영어가사를 썼으며, 'Les Moulins de mon cœur '라는 제목의 프랑스어 가사는 Eddy Marnay가 썼다. ​ 영화는 1968년에 만들어 졌는데, 1999년에 리메이크 되기도 했다. ​노래는 1968년 아카데미 주제가 상을 수상 했으며, 2004년 AFI(미국 영화 연구소)의 <미국영화 100년...100곡 조사> 에서 57위에 오르기도 했다. ​ 1968년 오리지널 영화 <The Thomas Crown Affair> 의 오프닝 크레딧에서는 노엘 해리슨이 노래를 불렀으며, 1969년 4월 14일 방송한 아카데미 시상식에서는 호세 펠리치아노에 의해서 공연되었다 .
