소피 발란틴 호킨스(Sophie Ballantine Hawkins, 1964년 11월 1일 출생)는 뉴욕시에서 태어난 그녀는 타악기 연주자로 1년 동안 맨해튼 음악학교에 다녔다가 음악 경력을 쌓기 위해 떠났다. 그녀는 "Damn I Wish I Was Your Love", "Right Beside You", "As I Lay Me Down(1994)"을 포함한 일련의 싱글 히트곡을 발표하며 첫 두 앨범으로 비판적이고 상업적인 성공을 거두었다. 그러나 3집 앨범 'Timbre'를 둘러싼 음반사 소니뮤직과의 분쟁으로 그녀는 후속 음반을 발매한 자신의 독립 레이블인 'Trumpet Swan Productions'을 설립하게 되었다. 호킨스는 채식주의자며 동물 권리와 환경적 원인에 대한 오랜 지지자다. 그녀는 또한 음악과 성소수자 권리에 있어서 여성들을 홍보하는 행사를 후원하며 잘 알려진 사회 및 정치 활동가다. 2008년에 그녀는 힐러리 클린턴의 대통령 선거 운동을 지지했다.  호킨스의 데뷔 앨범인 "Uns and Tails"는 1992년에 발매되었다. 전 세계적인 상업적 성공과 비평가들의 찬사를 모두 얻었으며, 1993년 그래미상 최우수 신인상 후보에 올랐다. 싱글 "Damn I Wish I Was Was Your Love"는 미국 빌보드 핫 100 싱글 차트에서 5위에 올랐고 영국에서도 톱 20의 히트를 기록했다. 그녀의 두 번째 앨범인 Whaler는 1994년에 발매되었다. 스티븐 립슨이 프로듀싱한 이 앨범에는 미국의 톱10 히트곡인 "As I Lay Me Down"도 수록되어 금 인증을 받았다. 앨범에 수록된 세 곡의 싱글은 13위로 정점을 찍은 "Right Beside You"를 포함하여 영국 탑 40에 올랐다.
