Lyrics

Scottis English

Comin thro the rye

1. Gin a body meet a body
Comin' thro' the rye
Gin a body kiss a body
Need a body cry?
Ilka lassie has her laddie
Nane, they say, hae!
Yet a' the lads they smile at me
When comin' thro' the rye.

3. 'Mang the train there is a swain
I dearly lo'e myself
But what his name or whaur his hame
I dinna care to tell
Ilka lassie has her laddie
Nane, they say, hae!
Yet a' the lads they smile at me
When comin' thro' the rye

Standar English

Coming through the rye

Should a body meet a body
Coming through the rye. Should a body kiss a body, Need no body cry?
Every lassie has her laddie, None, they say, have I. Yet all the lads they smile at me, When coming through the Rye.
Among the train there is a swain,
I dearly love myself.
But what his name o where his home
I do not care to tell.
Every lassie has her laddie,

Comin' Thro the Rye is a poem written by Robert Burns (1759-1796). It is well known as a traditional childrens song, with the words put to the melody of the Scottish Minstrel Common' Frae The Town. This is a variant of the tune to which Auld Lang Syne is usually sung - in fact the melodic shape is practically the same, the difference lying in the tempo and rhythm.
Most versions I have heard omit Burns chorus, replacing it with the following:
Ilk a lassie has her laddie,
Nane, they say hae I;
Yet a the lads they smile at me,
When comin thro the Rye.

The Rye referred to here is nothing to do with the American whisky, nor the corn crop rye, but is in fact a river in Scotland, hence the reason for Jenny being weet (wet), for she draiglt (dragged) her petticoatie (petticoat) whilst wading through the river.

Comin thro' the rye,
Gin a body kiss a body,
Need a body cry?

Gin a body meet a body
Comin thro' the glen,

Comin thro' the grain;
Gin a body kiss a body,
The thing's a body's ain.

Ev'ry Lassie has her laddie,
Nane, they say, have I,
Yet all the lads they smile on me,
When comin' thro' the rye.
